New Multi-Purpose Court to be Unveiled

The finishing touches are now being placed on Lincoln's new multi-purpose court. Although the heavy monsoon rains delayed the project, the new surface appears to have been worth the wait. Students of all ages are able to enjoy the surface during breaks, lunch, after-school and during SAISA practices. The court has association approved surfaces and lines for basketball, tennis and volleyball. We look forward to unveiling the court on Thursday, November 17 when our Girls' Basketball team take on GEMS at 4.00 pm. Come out and support your Snow Leopards!

This week's snapshot comes from our first Fabulous Friday! G5 put on a lively and upbeat presentation of their version of This Land is My Land.

The G5 students along with the direction of Ms. Iris rewrote the song to have a more global perspective which includes the chorus of:

We learn from each other at Lincoln Elementary

We come together from far and wide

Our school is made for you and me...

As global citizens themselves, they enthusiastically sang out and entertained the audience. It was a great example of one of our four Lincoln School Pillars:Global Citizenship.

AP Physics entertains

While conducting an AP Physics lab on the basketball court last week, it also became entertainment for some of the elementary students.

Elementary Video Book Reviews

One of the elementary school's ASA activities was "Video Book Reviews". Students shared a book or book series that they enjoyed reading. They composed a book review on a story board. They added pictures to go with the different sections of their review. They used the application 'iMovie' to create the video. They learned how to use the green screen to combine their narration with their photos. Check out their reviews and maybe you'll find a 'good read' for the summer.

CPHs or Clay Pot Heaters

In Social Studies, students have been examining how natural balance has been lost in Kathmandu, as well as the effects of the fuel crisis. Students are beginning to explore ways to minimize impact and reduce resource consumption. We were lucky to have Ms. Cri come in as a guest speaker to teach the students about one of the ways Mr. Ken and her work to reduce consumption and stay warm. Ms. Cri showed the students how to build the clay pot heaters and taught about the reduced environmental impact. CPHs  are a series of three clay pots bolted together. Small candles are lit within, with the smoke pollution being captured by the clay pots. CPHs can warm a small space. Stay tuned for more details on how to reduce your environmental impact.

Third Grade Students Make a Symmetrical Design

During Unit 6 in math, students were learning about the properties of polygons and symmetry. When given a little free time to explore with polygons, students independently created an elaborate design. Students worked cooperatively on the design whenever they had free time. The final design measures about 1 meter by 1 meter.

We have the good fortune of having author Marc Tyler Nobleman visit with our students and community next week. He will be presenting at the morning assembly as well as working directly with students within the classrooms.  Please see the information below. Hope to see you at the assembly!

Marc Tyler Nobleman (noblemania.blogspot.com) will be visiting Lincoln School as a guest author on Monday and Tuesday next week.  He will be giving a presentation Monday, January 11th at 8:30am.  This will be open to everyone at school and in the Lincoln School community. Following the presentations, he will be spending  time in several of the elementary classes, which will allow for some follow up discussion and give him a chance to teach the students about the writing process he goes through when creating his books.

Mr. Nobleman is the author of children's books, both fiction and nonfiction and chapter books, but is best known for his two nonfiction picture/comic books, Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman (illustrated by Ross MacDonald) and Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman (illustrated by Ty Templeton) and currently has a variety of other publications in the works.  To find out a little more about him before he arrives, feel free to watch Meet the Author or checkout his blog at: noblemania.blogspot.com.

Healthy Teeth and Warm Feet

Third grade is studying the local environment of Nepal. Students have been exploring environmental resources and their availability. Students grew concerned about the impact of the fuel shortage on local families. Many families are having to spend more money to obtain basic resources. Third graders want to help care by providing community members with a few basic supplies such as: new toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste, new socks, and new or gently used shoes. All donations are greatly appreciated and should arrive by December 7. Thank you!

Third Grade Receives iPads

Third graders were thrilled to take part in the LS School's one-to-one iPad integration. Students have been learning about iPad safety and care, as well as, how to use iPads as a tool in learning. Yesterday, students used their iPads to record themselves reading a challenging text with expression. Then, they listened to their reading and reflected. In a few weeks, students will record themselves reading the same passage and will reflect on areas of growth. 

Not only have the iPads brought fresh excitement to the learning process in third grade, they have also stimulated important learning discussions. Students have become more aware about learning tools. They are being trained to ask themselves what the most salient and efficient tool is in a learning situation. Is there a good app on their iPad, should they use a calculator, a pencil, their whiteboard, or is their brain the fastest tool in that moment?

Cupcake Monsters and a Big Thank You to the LS Support Staff

During the Halloween celebration on October 30th, Mrs. Sunderman's third graders decorated monster cupcakes to give to all of the support staff at the Lincoln School. The support staff helps student learning in invaluable ways every day and the third graders were excited to make a small gift sharing their appreciation. 

Pawita a third grader said, "I felt happy, excited, and proud to give the support staff treats to enjoy."

Jasmina, "I thought it was really cool, because we got to make our cupcakes. It felt good to make cupcakes for someone else."

Rylan, another third grader said, "I felt pretty good about making the cupcakes, because the support staff helps the school."

Over 70 cupcakes were decorated by students! Students worked to create unique and attractive monsters as well as Halloween themed thank you cards. Stay tuned for upcoming events as the third grade class class seeks to care for their community.

Grade Four Supports Nepal Earthquake Relief Efforts

On Monday morning I was a bit apprehensive as to how fourth grade students would react this week - I expected neediness, immaturity and discipline issues. What I discovered is that these children are a lot more resilient than we sometimes give them credit for. After the initial stories of "Where were you...", our conversations turned to community members affected by the earthquake. In particular, they wanted to know how our friend Bijay (school gardener/farmer) had fared. As you may know, over the last couple of years fourth graders have established a relationship with Bijay and his family at Okhar Pauwa through our Explore Nepal program. He told me that his family member's homes had been destroyed and the entire area near his farm had suffered major damage. He is working with a committee of local people to gather and deliver food, water, medicine and shelters as well as assistance and material for rebuilding. I shared this information with the students and they immediately wanted to help. When I suggested that we donate the funds raised from our vegetable sales they approved wholeheartedly.

Given all that has happened and the magnitude of this disaster, this is one way that fourth grade students can really and truly make a difference in helping Nepalis rebuild their homes, their communities and their lives. I feel confident when I say that these children will remember this for the rest of their lives.

Cricket Comes to the American School!

As part of Lincoln School’s secondary physical education program, students have been introduced to the rules, skills and game concepts involved in playing cricket. They were also given the opportunity to participate in two extra events.

The first was when one high school class was joined by Lincoln’s very own Preschool students to learn more about one of Australia’s favorite pastimes, as pre-school were studying the continent of Australia at the time. To teach them the basics of the sport, high school students designed bowling, batting and fielding activities for the children to play. It was a great class where all students got involved and everyone enjoyed.

The second was when Matthew Elliott, a former Australian cricketer and Charlie Burke, head coach of Hong Kong’s national cricket team made a special appearance on campus. The two arrived in Nepal to attend a tribute tournament held in honor of the late Phillip Hughes. While at school they talked to students and led a cricket session that was enjoyed by all.
