Snow Leopards Triumphant in NISSA Tournaments!

The Lincoln School Snow Leopards celebrated yet more successes in the NISSA Girls' Football and Boys' Basketball tournaments held today (March 25, 2017) on the Lincoln School campus. In the girls' football tournament, the Lady Leopards got off to a great start by defeating GEMS 8-0 in the first semi-final. Later on in the day, the girls played the NISSA Cup final against The British School. In a competitive game, the girls went down to an early goal, but showed good character to battle their way back in to the contest and emerge 5-2 victors. This meant that our Lady Leopards had won both the league and cup double! Karuna Sakya-Hooper was named the tournament's MVP.





In the boys' basketball tournament, the Lincoln Leopards were out to defend their NISSA trophy and began the game with an intense semi-final vs a high-pressing and competitive KISC team. Despite it being a tight encounter for most of the game, the boys went on a great 10-0 run at the start of the last quarter and KISC weren't able to recover, eventually losing by 12 points. The other semi-final saw GEMS down Rato Bangala, meaning that Lincoln would have a repeat match-up vs one of the teams in their pool. The Snow Leopards dominated the final from the outset, quickly going up 14-2 and extended their lead throughout the game. Despite GEMS possessing some tall players, the Lincoln boys stuck to their task in defense and transitioned quickly with clinical fast breaks. Final score: 47-22. Lincoln have won both the NISSA Girls' Football and Boys' Basketball championships in 2017!

BADMINTON TEAM BEATS MORE THAN THE HEAT IN COLOMBO!

SAISA Badminton this year was hosted at the Overseas School of Colombo in Sri-Lanka. We went a day early and got to spend one morning on the beach. The Lincoln School Badminton team showed great growth this year, with some strong individual wins and doubles play. More importantly, as a team Lincoln was very supportive of each other through every match. It was an amazing experience because this was the first trip to Colombo for most of us. The amazing food, the dances after each day of the tournament and the late night flights made this experience even more fun. I personally had an amazing time meeting new people from other SAISA schools and making new friends. This was the best SAISA yet, and I hope next year is just as amazing!!

Eight Grade Stop-Motion Animations

Eighth Graders recently completed a stop-motion animation project in Art and Music class, based on a social or environmental issue. Students worked in groups of three or four to complete a collage-style animation--made entirely from cut paper--and record their own music. They screened their animations in the theater last week, presented their process, and answered questions from teachers and students.

Fall Festival

On October 27th, Middle School Students participated in the Fall Festival which integrated Art, Music, and Language Arts projects into one wonderful exhibit in The Gallery. 

Grade 6:

In Language Arts students studied characterization in various texts and forms of media.  They created a villain and brought it to life using the 5 aspects of characterization. In Visual Art, students created aluminum foil and paper mache sculptures to bring their Language Arts villains to life. In Music, students completed their musical literacy unit and began an instrumental unit.

Grade 7: 

In Language Arts, students explored different types of emotions and fears, writing a personal story called a vignette about a time they felt fear. In Visual Art, students created villains and the environment they live in with oil pastels. In Music, students composed melodic themes with consonance and dissonant themes that represented their projects in Visual Art and Language Arts.

Grade 8:

In Language Arts students created their own dystopian society through studying Ayn Rand's Anthem. In Visual Art, students expressed their fears and phobias through linoleum printmaking. In Music, students composed background tracks to represent their print making with music technology software, instruments, and synthesizers.

High School Art  featured observational anatomical drawings of the human skeleton in the foyer.

7th Grade Art Class

For the past month, seventh grade students have split their class time between art and music. We began the school year with an integrative art and music lesson, based on work by the German expressionist Wassily Kandinsky. We proceeded with some sketching activities to exercise the students’ creative thinking skills. Law and Order Fairytale Unit

During this round of Exploratory classes, the Middle School decided to create a one act play. All of the different exploratory groups are contributing to some aspect of the play. There is an acting group, which is going to stage the play; there is an optical illusions group, which is creating special effects; a creative construction group that is building the sets; there is a duct tape design group, which is in charge of the costumes and props; and there is also a a group which is working to promote and advertise the play. Middle school are using C-block classes to work under the direction of the acting group and the producer of the play, Molly Neilson. The play, Law and Order Fairytale Unit is a modern day twist on disney and nursery rhyme characters. The main plot is based on a team of fairytale detectives working to solve one classic mystery: Who blew down the three little pigs house?

The play will be performed on December 10th from 3:10 to 4:00 P.M in the Globe Theater at Lincoln School. We hope to see you then!

Middle School Science Exhibition

On April 28th middle school students will share their hard work and discoveries in a science exhibition, to which the Lincoln community is invited.

Students were given the challenge of exploring any subject that they are interested in, through the scientific method. They designed experiments to test their hypotheses, gathered and analyzed their data for patterns and sources of error, and formed a conclusion that answered their questions.

The student scientists have explored questions relating to a really amazing range of topics, including: learning and distractions, impact of video games on many mental processes, choice blindness, color and attention, reaction to frustration, exercise physiology, stress and heart rate, self-esteem and peer pressure, bacterial filtering plants, solar engineering, air quality in Kathmandu, headphones and hearing damage, e- readers and reading speed.

All members of the community are invited to come and learn from our student scientists. The exhibition will take place from 8:30- 10:20 am in the middle and high school science labs.

Grade 6 design museum exhibits

Students in grade six exercise their understanding of the layers of the Earth and boundaries between tectonic plates to design a museum exhibit. They will be pitching their models of the plate boundaries to add them a museum display on the dynamic earth. As the students progress through the unit they will also be be developing an earthquake risk assessment for the Kathmandu valley based on our relationship with plate boundaries.

NGN - Next Generation Nepal

In conjunction with 8th grade studies in humanities, Katie Feit of Next Generation Nepal came to talk to Lincoln School students in middle school and high school about the issues of child trafficking and voluntourism in Nepal. The 8th grade students, as part of their study of human rights had read Little Princes by Conor Grennan who came Nepal as a volunteer in 2004 and later founded NGN with the mission of reuniting trafficked children with their families.
