The Lincoln Secondary Online Learning (LSOL) Program

Dear online parents and students,

I hope your lives are settling down at least a bit.  We had a very positive first day back with students here at Lincoln; the kids were clearly happy to be among friends, though many of you were missed.

You are currently out of town, or soon will be, and will be looking for ways to keep up with the learning missed during your absence.  The purpose of this email is to let you know how we are all going to accomplish this together.  

The Lincoln Secondary Online Learning (LSOL) Program 

The Lincoln online learning program will run in parallel to regular classes for the remainder of this semester and will allow students who are unable to be on campus to continue learning and to complete the academic work needed to receive credit for the semester. 

Students will be given online support through the Google Classroom platform, accessible by each student through their lsnepal.com Google account by going to http://classroom.google.com/.  

For each class that takes place on campus, and that has students in the LSOL program, teachers will upload an assignment or announcement on Google Classroom to inform students and their parents of the learning goals and assigned learning tasks for the class that day.  Parents and students will also be able to keep track of classes using the appropriate grade level academic calendars, found here: http://www.lsnepal.com/index.php/academics/middle-school/academic-calendars#year=2015&month=5&day=4&view=month

Google Classroom will be supplemented by other online resources (TedEd, YouTube, Khan Academy, etc.), Skype, video lessons, screencasts and email chats as appropriate and when feasible.

A coordinating teacher will be assigned to each student and will ensure consistent communication between the home and school.  This teacher will send out an introductory email soon and check in on a weekly basis, or as needed.  Once they have contacted you, please be sure to use them to work out any difficulties or questions you have.  We are working hard to ensure continuity in your child's education and know that there may be some snags, for example with access to the internet.  We are a small school and are able to be flexible so please let us know as soon as you hit a snag so we can work together to figure out a solution.

Lincoln School Kathmandu Earthquake Relief Fund

We appreciate the outpouring of support for Lincoln and the people of Nepal. As a school we are planning to support our local community and beyond. We have received numerous questions regarding donations. A PayPal account has been created: Lincoln School Kathmandu Earthquake Relief Fund through our business manager Janne (Shah) Gadegaard.

Money collected will go through a process of thorough vetting of needs to rebuild homes, provide medical and supporting the communities. No administrative costs will be incurred. We will share how the funds were distributed through our website and our FaceBook page later.

Years of drills and preparation have been put into practice

Thank you all for your support and well wishes. Communications have been difficult. To the best of our knowledge, the school community is safe and healthy. We will try to keep people informed to the best of our ability.

When the earthquake hit we had students on campus for play practice and mock AP exams. Some of those students spent the night with us before being re-united with their families. Everyone pitched in with the preparation of food and shelter, much as we had practiced over the years.

Middle School Science Exhibition

On April 28th middle school students will share their hard work and discoveries in a science exhibition, to which the Lincoln community is invited.

Students were given the challenge of exploring any subject that they are interested in, through the scientific method. They designed experiments to test their hypotheses, gathered and analyzed their data for patterns and sources of error, and formed a conclusion that answered their questions.

The student scientists have explored questions relating to a really amazing range of topics, including: learning and distractions, impact of video games on many mental processes, choice blindness, color and attention, reaction to frustration, exercise physiology, stress and heart rate, self-esteem and peer pressure, bacterial filtering plants, solar engineering, air quality in Kathmandu, headphones and hearing damage, e- readers and reading speed.

All members of the community are invited to come and learn from our student scientists. The exhibition will take place from 8:30- 10:20 am in the middle and high school science labs.

Cricket Comes to the American School!

As part of Lincoln School’s secondary physical education program, students have been introduced to the rules, skills and game concepts involved in playing cricket. They were also given the opportunity to participate in two extra events.

The first was when one high school class was joined by Lincoln’s very own Preschool students to learn more about one of Australia’s favorite pastimes, as pre-school were studying the continent of Australia at the time. To teach them the basics of the sport, high school students designed bowling, batting and fielding activities for the children to play. It was a great class where all students got involved and everyone enjoyed.

The second was when Matthew Elliott, a former Australian cricketer and Charlie Burke, head coach of Hong Kong’s national cricket team made a special appearance on campus. The two arrived in Nepal to attend a tribute tournament held in honor of the late Phillip Hughes. While at school they talked to students and led a cricket session that was enjoyed by all.

Grade 6 design museum exhibits

Students in grade six exercise their understanding of the layers of the Earth and boundaries between tectonic plates to design a museum exhibit. They will be pitching their models of the plate boundaries to add them a museum display on the dynamic earth. As the students progress through the unit they will also be be developing an earthquake risk assessment for the Kathmandu valley based on our relationship with plate boundaries.

Sunday, April 19th at 11:00 A.M the SAISA Jazz Band and SAISA Concert Band will be performing.

NGN - Next Generation Nepal

In conjunction with 8th grade studies in humanities, Katie Feit of Next Generation Nepal came to talk to Lincoln School students in middle school and high school about the issues of child trafficking and voluntourism in Nepal. The 8th grade students, as part of their study of human rights had read Little Princes by Conor Grennan who came Nepal as a volunteer in 2004 and later founded NGN with the mission of reuniting trafficked children with their families. Lincoln to Host Local Hoops Tournament

The Lincoln School gym is about to witness some great, competitive inter-school basketball. Come along to support your Snow Leopards in your red, white and black! 

Here is the game schedule:

- Thursdays, April, 2nd: LS vs. KISC. 4pm. 

- Saturday, April 4th LS vs Rato Bangala at 9am. 

- Monday, April 6th LS vs Modern Indian. 4pm.

- Monday, April 9th LS vs Ullens. 4pm.

- Potential 4th/5th place game on Tuesday, April 14th. This is a school holiday. If we are not playing in this game, it won't be hosted at LS. 

The semis and finals will be hosted at KISC on the 17th and 18th of April.

Flat Connections

Last month Grade 4 students at Lincoln School began collaborating with students from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Bulgaria and Thailand on the Flat Connections "A Week in the Life..." project.  This project joins elementary school classrooms globally with a view to exploring what life is like in each country through discussion, sharing, and collecting multimedia to create final products together.  Additionally, students explore global issues and conduct meaningful discussions and collaboration.  Outcomes will include student-driven solutions shared through creative use of technology.

During Monday's secondary advisory assembly, the literary magazine staff unveiled their current work in progress, an online Google Gallery student magazine titled, MOMENTUM. The magazine features writing and art from grades 6-12. Final call for submissions and the cover art contest is April 17th!
